John Archibald was educated in Scotland and qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 1965. Soon afterwards John moved to London where he worked for the accountancy firm, Thomson McLintock & Co. for three years.

In 1969 John joined Robert Fleming, the City investment banking group. During a period of more than thirty years he experienced a very wide variety of work in the finance sector, working in both the asset management and investment banking areas, including the role of Group Financial Controller. His responsibilities also included Treasury and risk management roles.

John’s involvement with asset management operations lead to him becoming Group Investment Manager for the Save & Prosper subsidiary and later John lived in Zurich for four years, where he established a Swiss banking operation for the banking group. John was a director of various operations for over 25 years, and ultimately became a director of the banking subsidiary and of the Group’s holding company.

During the 1990’s John was a member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and acted as chairman of the Accounting Standards Committee for a number of years.

John has been a non-executive director of Waterman Group plc for five years and is also Chairman of the Group’s Audit & Risk Committee.
