Waterman Wins At ICE Thames Valley Awards

The ‘Art at the Centre, Slough’ scheme for Slough Borough Council has won the Community Engineering Award

The ‘Art at the Centre, Slough’ scheme for Slough Borough Council has won the Community Engineering Award at the ICE Thames Valley Engineering Excellence Awards held on Friday 25th June, at the Runnymede Hotel in Egham.

The scheme is a major physical upgrade of the High Street which marks an important first step in Slough’s major regeneration programme for the town centre. The design team of Waterman and landscape architects Allen Scott worked closely alongside artists to inject colour, style and uniqueness to the contemporary design. The scheme includes modernistic colour contrasting paving, complementary street lighting and seating as well as imaginative use of open spaces along the High Street. The innovative shared space arrangements drastically improve traffic conditions around the town centre.

The design focuses on reinforcing existing open spaces and linking the streetscape together with a unique floorscape that derives its form from the history, arts and cultures of Slough.  The spaces created within the pedestrianised zone are uncluttered to allow freedom of movement and security, as well as allowing the street to be viewed as an outdoor linear gallery. The scheme also includes implementation of a 20mph zone, with traffic calming, revised parking layout and new pedestrian crossings and facilities. The works include:-

• 17,000 sq m of High Quality Granite Paving
• Replacement Lighting
• Catenary Lighting
• Upgrade CCTV
• Soft Landscape Area
• New Trees with Feature Uplighters
• New Signing
• Incorporation of art by five Artists including Floorscapes and Lighting

Waterman duties also included Site Supervision and CDM Co-ordination.
