Four Waterman projects shortlisted for Civic Trust Award
Waterman are delighted that Grange Primary School, One New Street Square, Quadrant Arcade and The Bower have been shortlisted in the upcoming Civic Trust Awards.
The annual awards ceremony was established in 1959 to recognise and celebrate the outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment. This year’s winning schemes will be presented with an award or commendation at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester on 6 March.
Grange Primary School
Grange Primary, a Victorian era school, underwent a major refurbishment to create an improved school entrance and increase its capacity for an additional 105 pupil places thanks to the addition of new satellite classrooms. The structure’s tasteful brick cladding blends in with the surrounding residential properties and new characteristic pavilions house modern kitchen, nursery, library, staff offices and school house facilities on the street front. The new buildings were constructed in a CLT structural frame with pitched roofs and a double-height Albert McKenzie dining hall provides enhanced dining facilities as well as allowing more space for the school to congregate for assembly. Waterman were appointed to provide structural engineering and building services design, working closely with the architect for the careful planning and detailed coordination in the early design stages.
One New Street Square
The superb Grade A office development at One New Street Square was designed by Apt to provide 15 floors of quality office space combined with ground floor retail units and reception areas. The Pas de Deux form offers a dynamic addition to the London skyline with panoramic views across the city. We were appointed by Landsec to provide structural engineering services, working closely with the architect, Apt, to achieve an exceptional floor plate with minimal internal columns.
Quadrant Arcade continues the prestigious restoration of Regent Street, breathing new life into the vibrant West End retail destination. Our team were appointed by The Crown Estate to provide structural engineering services to this Grade II listed building. Originally built in the early part of the 20th Century, works have included the part reconstruction and refurbishment of the existing building. The arcade has been transformed and opened up to Regent Street by the removal of one of the main columns to the façade, delivering a more inviting entrance to this hidden historic gem. Located next to London’s Old Street roundabout, The Bower is a mixed-use landmark designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), offering 48,300 m2 of vibrant retail and restaurant space at ground level with three high-quality office buildings framing the mews; The Tower, The Warehouse and The Studio. The project involved the refurbishment of the Tower and The Warehouse, adding additional floors and side extensions, as well as a new three-storey building, The Studio, constructed out of exposed reinforced concrete flat slabs. Our team provided civil and structural engineering design services. Image courtesy of Timothy Soar.
