Quadrant Arcade and Buckingham Green scoop AJ Retrofit Awards

Waterman are delighted that Quadrant Arcade took the prize for ‘Hotel, Retail and Leisure £5 million and over’ while Buckingham Green was awarded within the ‘Housing £5 million and over’ category at the AJ Retrofit Awards on 11 September at The Brewery in London.

The Awards, hosted by the Architects’ Journal, celebrates the most impressive design, engineering and construction schemes that prolong and improve the life of the built environment.

Quadrant Arcade continues the prestigious restoration of Regent Street, breathing new life into the vibrant West End retail destination. Our team were appointed by The Crown Estate to provide structural engineering services to this Grade II listed building, known as Q2. Originally built in the early part of the 20th Century, works have included the part reconstruction and refurbishment of the existing building. The arcade has been transformed and opened up to Regent Street by the removal of one of the main columns to the façade, delivering a more inviting entrance to this hidden historic gem.
Judges felt the architect had really understood the psychology of shopping in its reinvention. One key move – the removal of a column and remodelling of the entrance – breathed new life into the underperforming arcade by creating ‘a glamour and intrigue that draws you in’.

Buckingham Green, designed by Fletcher Priest Architects, is situated in the conservation area at St James’ Park and consisted of the remodelling of an outdated 1970’s office complex to deliver fresh mixed-use residential and commercial units. These are set among a new public realm, offering a high-quality streetscape and encouraging active pedestrian movement across the site. Our team provided structural engineering for the development. The judges stated; “This is an inventive reuse of a building; the architects have reused the existing frames, made the floorplate bigger, and offered generous spaces. This is well-executed – and it’s replicable.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in these prestigious projects!
