The British Museum

Our building services team were appointed to conduct a full energy review and audit on the existing building services systems serving the prestigious British Museum at the main Bloomsbury site in the centre of London.

Our engineers carried out a full review of the existing systems installed within the building, documenting comprehensively the manner in which the existing systems are installed, interact and service the different areas. The review also recorded the carbon emissions of the site over the previous four years identifying where energy has been used and how.

The review identified a number of strategic works packages and quantified how the existing energy and utility costs could be reduced to fulfil the Museum’s current planning requirements for carbon emission reductions across the site.

These system options included major plant replacement schemes such as on site Combined Heat and power systems (CHP), centralised boiler and chiller plant with district heating and cooling systems, photovoltaic cells, solar collectors. The report also identified more subtle measures such as replacement LED lighting fittings and lighting control systems, relaxation of humidity and temperature control bands and more energy efficient drives and motors.

Through a full computer modelled simulation of the site, the report provides energy saving predictions for the different options and moreover identifies how the modification to the site infrastructure would impact on each other either positively or negatively, creating a highly accurate prediction model moving forward.
