Established in 1851, Hulme’s Loreto College has become a cornerstone of secondary education for Manchester’s young people as they look to build towards a future in education or the world of work. To keep pace with their growing popularity and breadth of course offerings, the College has continually evolved its estate to incorporate leading-edge buildings and facilities.

Working in collaboration with the College as their trusted engineering partner since 2008, our building services specialists first supported the design and delivery of the Ellis & Kennedy building, which was named as the 2010 BREEAM ‘Education Building of the Year’. Next, we helped tackle extensive renovations of both the Ball and Ward buildings, before providing design and consultancy input for the construction of the St Joseph’s building.

Fast forward to the current day, and our partnership with Loreto College shifted focus to the southern area of their campus with the St. Vincent’s building, which completed in the summer of 2025. Designed by 10architects, the major scheme delivered state-of the-art facilities across three floors, with the brand new, 24,000 sq ft teaching block accommodating an additional 264 students. Spread across three storeys, the building features 20 fully equipped classrooms, several staff rooms, a spacious assembly area, and a study centre which significantly enhances the learning environment.

Continuing our successful relationship with the College and 10architects, our team provided building services designs for this significant building. With sustainability a key project theme, our specialists focused on reducing operational carbon emissions and minimising energy consumption in use. This saw the installation of air source heat pumps, 100 sqm of photovoltaic panels, and a passive natural ventilation system with night cooling. Together with a highly efficient building envelope, these measures deliver a 45% improvement over current Part L CO₂ targets.

In a further boost to the facilities on offer in the campus’ southern area, the most recent development saw the construction of a compact new stand-alone catering facility. Known as ‘Our Lady’s’, this sits adjacent to the St. Vincent’s building and provides a kitchen space and break-out area for students. Our team provided the building services design for this scheme which completed in September 2025, once again seeing us work with 10architects to deliver a highly functional catering facility.

It’s fantastic to see the Woodbury Building reach completion. This redevelopment will make a lasting difference for students, staff and visitors, and I’m sure it will prove a popular addition to the facilities on offer at the College. It has been a real pleasure to work in partnership with the College in recent years to help them achieve their goal for delivering a more sustainable campus, and we look forward to working closely with them once again in the future.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Women and Children’s Building is a £110 million scheme which has transformed healthcare for families across Cheshire and North Wales.

The state-of-the-art facility opened its doors in autumn 2025, bringing together maternity, neonatal, paediatric, and gynaecology services under one roof. The three-storey building replaces the original 1970s structure and forms part of the NHS’s national programme to eliminate the use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in healthcare buildings. AHR Architects’ design focuses on creating a welcoming and light environment to cater to a wide range of patient needs, whilst also prioritising staff wellbeing with a variety of rest rooms and training spaces.

Offering a wide range of specialist facilities, the building includes a modern delivery suite with 11 birthing rooms and two obstetric theatres, a 24-bed maternity ward with en-suite single rooms, a neonatal unit with capacity for up to 16 cots, a children’s ward with overnight accommodation for families, and enhanced staff and visitor amenities designed with accessibility and sustainability in mind.

The development achieved compliance with the NHS Net Zero Carbon Building Standard (NZCBS); a landmark accomplishment that sets a precedent across NHS England. This is the first building within NHS England to meet the rigorous sustainability stipulations outlined in their NZCBS, underscoring the Trust’s commitment to environmental responsibility and future-focused healthcare infrastructure. Delivered by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), a joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, and designed by AHR Architects, the Women & Children’s Building scheme achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, reflecting a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Working in close collaboration with the project team, Waterman’s building services specialists provided the mechanical and electrical design for the new building through the P23 procurement route, and were instrumental in supporting the drive to achieve NZCBS status.

The design behind the Women & Children’s Building demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to energy efficiency, climate resilience, and patient comfort, underpinned by Waterman’s innovative MEP strategy. A robust electrical infrastructure, featuring a new high-voltage power supply, N+1 transformers, and a standby generator, ensures uninterrupted power for critical hospital operations. Energy-efficient heating and cooling are delivered via simultaneous and reversible roof-mounted heat pumps, with domestic hot water supplied by a water-to-water heat pump to enhance overall performance.

To further minimise environmental impact, a 400 sqm photovoltaic array contributes to a reduced carbon footprint and supports the hospital’s long-term sustainability goals. The building is fully mechanically ventilated to maintain optimum air quality and comfort, while a comprehensive Building Management System (BMS) enables intelligent monitoring and control of all environmental systems. Together, these elements reflect a strong commitment to sustainability, operational reliability, and modern healthcare standards.

The NZC Building Standard forms a key part of the NHS’s broader ambition to become the world’s first Net Zero national health service. By meeting this standard, the Countess of Chester Hospital’s new facility demonstrates how modern healthcare buildings can be both high-performing and environmentally conscious.
