Habiba Bernier gives us the lowdown on what she enjoys most about her environmental apprenticeship
This National Apprenticeship Week, Habiba Bernier gives us the lowdown on how she splits her time between the office and university as she works towards her Environmental Science degree.
I joined Waterman in August 2021 as an Apprentice in the London environmental team and my training as an Environmental Practitioner has involved an interesting and varied mix of learning experiences.
From Tuesday to Friday, you’ll find me working in the office. Here, I rotate my position amongst the environmental team every six months to broaden my knowledge and practical understanding of how each section operates, meeting their client’s needs and addressing the environmental challenges the world is currently facing. For example, during my current stint with the Land Contamination team, I am assisting with their report writing and I’ve also attended site visits where I’m helping compile data on contaminants found in groundwater and soil samples.
Every Monday, I attend Kingston University in Kingston Upon Thames where I’m studying for my Environmental Science BSc degree. It is here that I’m learning the theory and practice of sustainability and the workings of our planet’s major environmental systems, as well as gaining an understanding of how we can predict and respond to environmental challenges. I find it really helpful that this content underpins and enhances my understanding of my work with Waterman.
Throughout my degree I have participated in fieldtrips where we can put our learning into practice in the real world. Our first fieldtrip took place in Brixton where we were tasked with researching the extent of basic amenities within a 20-minute radius of a certain neighbourhood. I’m also looking forward to our next fieldtrip which will be a weeklong trip to Cornwall. I particularly like being able to meet Apprentices from other businesses during these trips because I have been able to form connections and friendships with a wider variety of people in the same field of work.
