“Stop wondering and give it a try, it may surprise you!”

I graduated from Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, in 2015 and it was whilst studying for my master’s degree in environmental engineering that I started working for Waterman in their Warsaw office. It was here that I had the opportunity to see the design process and gain a better understanding of how mechanical engineering problems can be solved. After two years, I was offered a graduate position at our office in Dublin within their building services team.

I had dreamt about becoming an engineer ever since I was a child and it has turned out even better than what I imagined. Having only joined the Dublin team at the beginning of 2017, I have already noticed how the engineer’s here have a different approach to technical solutions and problem solving compared to what I was taught in Poland. It’s been a great learning opportunity because I have come across a wide range of tasks and technical regulations that I was not previously familiar with.

Moving abroad was a challenge in itself as I was worried it would be hard to settle in somewhere new. Thankfully, I have received a warm welcome from everyone in the Dublin office and they have done everything in their power to make me feel at home.

The most interesting part of my job is the wide range of possibilities that are available to me, allowing for my continued development in the industry. I am currently working on single and multi-family housing and school projects in addition to learning new digital software such as DEAP – Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure; it is exciting to work on real projects and learn from experienced engineers. It is also really pleasing to see the projects I am working on taking shape.

I am grateful for the opportunity to transfer from Warsaw to Dublin because I have could interlink my passions for working and travelling, as well as learning about new cultures and people.

My advice to those considering a career in Engineering would be to stop wondering and give it a try, it may surprise you!
