Providing the ‘Next Steps’ as Business Ambassadors

Nick Harrison, Waterman’s Group Learning & Development Manager, and Charlotte Hitchens, a Structures Graduate, attended the Next Steps Employability event in Bromley on 29 January to meet with a range of Sixth Form students who are currently studying for their A-Levels.

Organised by the Bromley Education Business Partnership, the ‘Business Ambassadors’ joined other local and national employers as they volunteered their time to meet with students from Charles Darwin School, Hayes School, and Harris Academy who are exploring alternative options for further education, such as an apprenticeship.

During the event, Waterman’s Ambassadors led various speed-networking activities, including reviewing and critiquing CVs, advising on interview preparation and explaining how apprenticeship programmes work.

Students rotated tables every 20 minutes in order to talk with a wide range of employers, in addition to hearing key note presentations by speakers from Jobcentre Plus, London South East Colleges and the National Apprenticeship Service.

Nick Harrison commented; “Next Steps is a great opportunity for students who aren’t seeking to go down the full-time university route after leaving school, but who want to find out about other higher education options they could consider. The event was a great chance to talk about apprenticeships and work experience, as well as helping students to consider how they can prepare for the workplace by creating a powerful CV and thinking about the interview process.”
