“I learnt so much from these experiences which can’t be taught in a lecture theatre”

I have always liked and had an interest in buildings, when I was about 16 I completed one week work experience where I saw some blueprint plans and I realised this fitted with my enjoyment of maths and decided to pursue a career in engineering.

Whilst at University, there was an opportunity to apply to companies that were willing to take on Undergrads through a matching scheme and this is when I first found out about Waterman. I liked the projects that Waterman work on and the variety, type and scale of those projects. I also have a keen interest in the Environmental/Sustainability aspect and Waterman offer that all under one roof.

The sponsorship scheme provided a great opportunity to see the practical application of what you learn in a lecture theatre and I feel it gave you an advantage and a head start for the coming year. During placements I had the opportunity to attend project meetings and site visits which you rarely get the opportunity to do as part of your degree, so it was great being able to see it all in action.

My advice to anyone looking for a career in engineering consultancy is to find a placement that you are interested in, it makes a big difference to your studies and being offered a permanent Graduate role through my sponsor was a huge relief while studying for my final exams.

My role is so varied, no day is the same, from calculations to sketches, attending meetings and interacting with the design team. I have the opportunity to work on projects which are all at different stages of the design, making it more interesting. At the moment the majority of the projects I am working on are at the planning stage, so I am looking forward to some more site visits once they are at that stage.

As a Graduate at Waterman you don’t just get variety, you are also given lots of responsibility, good exposure and the ability to get involved.

As a Graduate member of both ICE and IStructE, I am currently working towards becoming a Chartered member of the ICE through Waterman’s ICE training agreement scheme and it is great having the support of others in the team who have gone through the process.

Our London office also provides a great location for a lunchtime run and you feel refreshed for the afternoon!
