8 Finsbury Circus wins ‘Best Commercial Workplace’ at BCO Awards

We are delighted that our project 8 Finsbury Circus in London has won ‘Best Commercial Workplace’ at the Regional BCO Awards for London and South East.

The British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards acknowledge innovation and best practice, and one of the primary objectives is to define excellence in office space. As part of this, the annual Awards programme provides public recognition for top quality design and functionality and a benchmark for excellence in workplaces.

The category ‘Best Commercial Workplace’ aims to recognise new buildings initiated on a speculative basis for commercial letting including buildings that are substantially pre-let or sold on to an occupier.

8 Finsbury Circus is a 17,000m2 commercial property of remarkable architectural design by WilkinsonEyre. Waterman was appointed by Stanhope and Mitsubishi Estate to provide structural engineering services on this prestigious project.

The project was praised by the judges as a delightful new office building which maximises the development potential of a very difficult site, whilst respecting the surrounding heritage. The judges noted that traditional materials have been cleverly used to create a contemporary piece of architecture that blends effortlessly with its historic neighbours on the circus, which they cited as a mark of an intelligent and carefully considered re-development.

Richard Whitehead, Regional Director of Waterman Structures, commented; “We are extremely proud that 8 Finsbury Circus has been recognised for this prestigious award. It is a big achievement for the entire project team. The structural design was challenging due to the unusual shape of the site. We used BIM and Revit-modelling throughout to tailor the design for its complex structure to make sure the final building is both efficient and flexible for the end-user.”

The structure was tailored to deliver column free space from the central core to the perimeter façade of this pentagonal building. Penetrations through floor beams were carefully coordinated with the on-floor services distribution to allow opportunity for flexible tenancy splits and efficient distribution of services across the floorplate.

The winners were announced at the awards ceremony on 25th April 2017 at Hilton, Park Lane, London.

8 Finsbury Circus is now going on to compete in the National Awards, which will take place on the 3rd October 2017 at the Grosvenor House, AJW Marriott Hotel in London.

Congratulations to all involved in this exciting project!
