Emergency Repairs at Dublin’s Dun Laoghaire Harbour

Fuelled by the heavy snowstorms and continued severe weather of the first half of 2018, very heavy seas and elevated sea levels resulted in coastal flooding and damage to coastal structures and harbours along the east coast of Ireland in March.

Dun Laoghaire Harbour, in Dublin bay, is protected by two 1.5km long piers that envelope and protect the harbour. Built in the mid-19th century, these two granite structures have stood the test of time, thanks in to constant repair and upkeep, particularly after big storm events. Last March’s storm resulted in overtopping of the exposed East Pier, damaging the high-quality concrete and granite pavement, granite cobble galletting and foundations of the Victorian sun-shelter.

Waterman were appointed by the Harbour Company to survey the damage in the immediate aftermath of the storm, and to develop a strategy for addressing the damage. Repair works were ranked depending on urgency, with the most urgent put to tender immediately. With repairs now underway, the Pier is expected to be substantially open to the public again in a few weeks.

The appointment follows on from almost twenty years of providing engineering services at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

Paul O’Connell, Managing Director of Waterman Moylan said: “We are especially pleased to be in a position to assist the Harbour Company in preserving the wealth of historic marine infrastructure and buildings in their estate and in contributing to continuous improvement to the public realm within the harbour.”
