Premium lifestyle brand Joules opens its new HQ premises
Waterman is pleased to celebrate the opening of lifestyle brand Joules new HQ premises.
Designed by Edge Architects, the scheme has involved the construction of two new ‘barns’ along with a large atrium link between them and the fully refurbished retained elements of the existing compass house, creating a new 60,000 sq ft facility enabling the brands long term growth and development in the UK and internationally.
Waterman’s building services experts were delighted to provide mechanical and electrical building services for this inspirational workspace inspired by the design of a country barn to mirror the brand’s heritage with product design and creativity at its heart. Our team worked closely with the architect to sensitively integrate the new ‘exposed’ services strategy with the existing and new structural elements.
To reduce the visual impact of the new ventilation services as well as to cut embodied carbon through reduced material use, the atrium is used as a return air plenum. This provides a duct-free path back to the roof-mounted air handling plant where waste heat from the extract air is recovered via thermal wheels and re-used to pre-heat the fresh air supply. The reductional operational energy was a driving factor in the design brief from the outset and the development uses the latest air source heat pump, high-efficiency heating and cooling technology and high efficiency, and intelligently controlled lighting throughout to further cut CO2 emissions.
Nick Jones, CEO of Joules, commented: “This is an extremely exciting next chapter for Joules. With the opening of The Barn, we have introduced a new fully flexible approach to how our colleagues work, and the space is critical to that. Not only will it allow our teams to better connect with one another – whether in the office or working from home – but it also brings the countryside in through its exquisite design, helping to inspire colleagues from across the business. This wonderful space not only reflects the heritage of the brand but positions the company more strongly in the long-term as we look to a future of continued strong growth.”
Mike Lyons, Waterman’s Technical Director of Building Services, commented: “We are delighted to celebrate the opening of Joules new headquarters facility. It has been an exciting project with a unique and bespoke blend of retained and new construction. Despite being constructed during the worst parts of the pandemic, the project team has fully realised the aspirations of Joules original intent by incorporating both function and appearance with seamlessly integrated efficient building services design both in terms of energy usage and carbon footprint.”
