The Bower completes

Waterman are delighted that The Bower, a new 48,300 m2 landmark development next to London’s Old Street Roundabout, has reached practical completion.

The exceptional new scheme, as designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) Architects, offers vibrant retail and restaurant amenities with three high-quality office buildings, The Tower, The Warehouse and The Studio, framing the new mews.

A new public realm has also been included on the ground floor, punching a hole through The Tower to create a pedestrian walkthrough from Old Street to Baldwin Street.

Our team were appointed by Helical Plc to carry out civil and structural engineering design services, designing details such as the exposed fair-faced hollow-core precast planks supported on cellular steel beams within The Warehouse, whilst dramatically enhancing The Tower by the addition of side extensions which create double height spaces for each existing floor. The teams carefully consideredthe spare capacity in the existing building and were able to add three additional floors at roof level with minimal need for structural strengthening.

Charlie Scott, Director for Waterman Structures, commented; “The Bower buildings are a celebration of exemplar refurbishment. By combining the exposed existing and historic structures, the project teams have been able to deliver three vibrant and successful office spaces in the heart of Old Street.”
