Creating temporary accommodation for the homeless at Glencoe Road

Waterman are proud to be involved with youth homelessness charity, Roundabout, and Projex Building Solutions (Projex) to transform a large apartment building on Glencoe Road, Sheffield, into individual and shared apartments for six young people who would otherwise be homeless.

Since it started in 1977, Roundabout has supported homeless people aged 16-25. They now provide shelter, support and life skills for over 250 young people per day who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in South Yorkshire.

A grant of £100,000 has been given towards the refurbishment through the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyor (RICS) and LandAid’s ‘Pledge150’ campaign, which launched in 2017 with the aim of uniting the wider property industry, to make a lasting difference to the growing homelessness epidemic by delivering more homes for vulnerable young people.

As part of the collaboration with Leeds-based Projex, Waterman will be providing pro bono mechanical and electrical engineering design services alongside structural engineers ARP, architects Integreat Plus, PWC Building Control Services and suppliers Heatrea Salida and Vent Axia.

Ben Keegan, Roundabout’s Chief Executive, said; “This much needed facility will provide high-standard accommodation for up to six young people, giving them a safe place to stay as they progress towards independent living. Whilst here, they will have the opportunity to learn vital life skills, begin employment or training and improve their confidence and self-esteem. This project will be an important steppingstone for young people working towards living independently and moving on to their own tenancy.”

Steven Halmshaw, Waterman’s Director for Building Services, commented; “It is a pleasure to be a part of this project, collaboratively working alongside the generous design teams and suppliers to apply our respective skills and knowledge for such a worthwhile cause.”

Work is due to start on site in April for its first residents to take occupancy in the summer.
