Georgia Lilley wins ACE Apprentice of the Year Award
Georgia Lilley, a Design Engineer Apprentice in our Structures team in London, was awarded Apprentice of the Year at the ACE awards hosted by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) via live stream on Thursday 16th September.
Currently studying at London South Bank University, Georgia has been part of Waterman’s apprentice scheme since September 2018. Passionate about inspiring the next generation of civil engineers and raising the profile of careers in this exciting field, Georgia has participated in a wide range of STEM activities including speaking engagements, panel debates and career fairs at schools, colleges and universities.
The judges congratulated Georgia on her achievement by saying: “Georgia was extremely passionate and enthusiastic about STEM, equality and diversity. She challenges perceptions of apprenticeships and passionately speaks about helping more women into the industry. She articulated well on her technical knowledge in structural engineering and taking on additional tasks outside of her employment including company internal sketch clubs, Women in Engineering, Women in STEM, Young Apprenticeship Ambassador and the Virtual Stem fest including hosting career stands and providing talks to schools.”
Congratulating the winners, ACE’s interim CEO Laurence Brett, said: “The last 18 months have been especially testing for everyone, but it didn’t stop us receiving some fantastic and truly inspiring entries that showed all the ingenuity our sector is famed for. We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of the industry and the ten worthy winners announced today.”
Nick Harrison, Waterman’s Learning and Development Director, commented: “This is an excellent and well deserved achievement by Georgia. Throughout her apprenticeship Georgia has demonstrated a proactive approach to her work and studies, commitment to informing and inspiring the next generation of apprentice talent. She is a strong role model as an apprentice and I am excited for Georgia’s future as she develops her engineering career”.
We are also delighted for Taylor Young-Chambers, an Area Manager for the London North region within our specialist secondment team who was shortlisted for the ‘Emerging Professional of the Year’ category at the awards.
