Joining the pack at this year’s Wolf Run

Jonathan Hoare and Claire Brown took on the Wolf Run’s Autumn Wolf running challenge on 8 September to raise money for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a leading charity that is taking a stand against male suicides.

The Wolf Run is a 10k off-road running challenge in the form of mud, trail and obstacles course that is designed to test your physical and mental strength.

As the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK, CALM is always looking for volunteers to join their mission of preventing suicides. Thanks to Jonathan and Claire’s gruelling accomplishment, they have managed to raise £673 so far for this worthy cause.

Claire commented; “This is the first time I have undertaken a challenge such as this and wanted to put my best foot forward. I revamped my diet (excluding the odd cookie) and rose to the sound of the cockerels to make it to the gym before work. A mix of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), cardio and strength was incorporated into a haphazard and home-made routine that resulted in a multitude of sore muscles and complaints, but ultimately made me fitter and stronger. CALM is a subject that is close to my heart and I am delighted that we can make even the smallest of differences and donate to this cause. With the donations we’ve collected so far, we can keep four phone lines open for one night (£160 each) which will benefit so many people who are struggling.”

In addition to their ongoing initiatives such as ‘ALAN’ (Ask, Listen, Action, Network), CALM is hosting their first ‘Lost Hours Walk’ on 26 October which is a night walk for all of the family and friends who didn’t have enough time with their loved ones. If you are interested in taking part, you can view the full details here.

Knowing all too well of the effects of suicide on the people who are left behind, Jonathan said; “This year marks the 30th anniversary of when I lost my brother to suicide. Whilst there have been some improvements in the support available over the years, the rates of suicide are still at an unacceptably high level. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated and helped us to support CALM as they offer more vital support to those in need, preventing more families from experiencing the devastating loss of a loved one.”
