Planning green light for £1 bn Purfleet regeneration

Waterman are delighted that the £1 bn Purfleet Centre Regeneration scheme has secured planning approval from Thurrock Council.

Located on the north shore of the River Thames in Essex, the major project will bring 2,850 new homes and a new town centre to Purfleet, complete with retail and restaurant units and a 93,000 m² film and TV studio complex. In addition, the community will benefit from two new schools, a medical centre and other key community facilities.

With a view to maximise accessibility, the Purfleet Centre Regeneration Ltd (PCRL) scheme, a joint venture between Urban Catalyst and Swan Housing Association, will focus on improving local infrastructure with an upgraded railway station and transport linkages with the neighbouring M25 motorway.

Our team supported the outline planning application with a variety of specialist reports and strategies, including flood risk assessment and drainage strategy, transport assessment, land quality and remediation strategy, landscape and visual impact study, historic environment assessment, arboriculture survey, civil engineering and highway design, also completing the environmental impact assessment. In addition, we developed the site wide energy strategy for the site which will utilise air source heat pump technology for renewable heating.

Sir Tim Laurence, chair of PCRL said in a statement; “We are thrilled our Purfleet regeneration proposals have been approved, creating thousands of much needed homes, significant additional employment and supporting long-term growth in Thurrock. We look forward to moving onto the next phase working in partnership with Thurrock Council.”

Peter Begbey, Director of Waterman Infrastructure & Environment, said; “We are delighted to see this major regeneration scheme successfully progress from concept design to secure planning consent. We look forward to continuing our work with PCRL as construction commences in the coming months.”
