Royal Star and Garter completes first phase
A splendid collection of luxury apartments within Richmond’s most famous landmark.
The stunning Royal Star and Garter has a colourful past with links to royalty and major events in British history. Having been in use as a care home and hospital for ex-military service personnel since the 1920s, the meticulously refurbished Grade II Listed landmark provides 86 luxuriously specified apartments with an iconic view of the River Thames visible from the restored grounds.
These unique residences have been sympathetically restored and specified to the highest possible standards in order to create an incomparable lifestyle for its residents. Private facilities include a leisure suite with a pool in the King and Queen Rooms, a spa and treatment room, gymnasium and a Harrods concierge. A chapel building within the building was retained.
We were appointed for Structural and Civil services within this major development by London Square, providing the structural drawings for tender and the detail drawings for construction.
From an engineering perspective, the scheme contained many unique design features, including the construction of a new double basement car park for 114 cars that required the removal of the homes original formal terrace garden. Structural amendments included tunnelling through of existing foundations, underpinning of the existing 1920’s ten-storey structure and extensive modifications of the structural layout.
Mike Broderick, Director of Structures, commented; “We are very proud to have been a part of this prestigious development. Our project team have worked hard to achieve a high standard restoration which will provide a profoundly luxurious accommodation for its new residence.”
The first 30 apartment units, Phase 1, are beginning to be occupied. Phase 2, which comprises another 50 apartment units, is due for completion in April 2017.
Royal Star and Garter won ‘Best London Home by a large-scale Developer’ at the London Evening Standard New Homes Awards in May 2016.
