St Winefride’s Campus nominated for two Education Estates Awards
Waterman are delighted that St Winefride’s Campus at Hugh Baird College in Merseyside, England, has been shortlisted within the ‘Innovation in Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Inspiring Learning Spaces’ categories of the Education Estates Awards.
With support from the Department for Education, the Awards celebrates excellence and achievement in education and will be hosted in the Ballroom at The Principal Manchester on 15 October.
Hugh Baird College is one of the largest education and training facilities in the area, accommodating more than 5,000 students within 300 courses. As designed by IBI Group architects, the former St Winefride’s Roman Catholic Church was transformed into a state-of-the-art health, social and mental health care training facility.
In collaboration with the local NHS provider, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, the new 2,000 m2 scheme was completed in 2018 and incorporates some of the original church features within the vibrant hands-on training amenities including a simulation suite, small café, library and reading areas. A single-storey building has also been built adjacent to the campus to provide a mental health and wellbeing centre for the college students and local community called the Life Rooms, providing a safe and welcoming environment for its visitors. We were appointed to provide building services and structural engineering design services for this innovative scheme.
