Waterman appointed on Wakefield’s largest leisure centre
Waterman are delighted to have been appointed on the new Five Towns Leisure and Wellbeing Hub in Pontefract, the largest leisure centre of its kind ever built in the Wakefield district.
The Hub has been designed by GT+3 Architects to seamlessly incorporate both the building’s interior and exterior as part of Wakefield Council’s vision to create a focal point for health and wellbeing, building on and improving the existing leisure provision within a well-established park.
The proposed indoor leisure facilities are to include a 10-lane swimming pool, studio pool with adjustable floor, exercise studios, gym, dedicated spin studio, climbing wall and café in addition to meeting and referral rooms for local community use.
In order to make the most of the centre’s location, outdoor facilities have been approached to appear like an effortless expansion of Pontefract Park and will include four tennis courts, a wellbeing garden, interactive play area and full size 3G sports pitch with artificial grass.
We were appointed to provide civil and structural design services which included creating the braced steel frame with clear span lattice trusses over the pool. The team utilised BIM to assist with the design of the striking façades complex geometry which is curved both horizontally and vertically. Additional concrete work will be carried out for the in situ RC pools and precast terracing units within the viewing area.
Work is due to complete on site in autumn 2020.
