Waterman shortlisted for Consultancy and Engineering Award

We are delighted to have been shortlisted in the category ‘Collaboration Champion of the Year’ at the Consultancy and Engineering Awards 2017 for our involvement in the UK pilot of NABERS.

one_angel_court_featureThe Award, by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), is showcasing success and best practice for the engineering and consultancy community globally.

The ‘Collaboration Champion of the Year’ category recognises an organisation working in the natural and built environment that can demonstrate collaboration between two or more industry partners to represent an outstanding relationship that resulted in the added value to a project, their workforce or a customer.

Waterman has teamed up with Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan in the UK pilot of NABERS (National Australian Build Environmental Rating System), Australia’s world leading office energy rating scheme, to use the new Angel Court commercial office building in London for part of the study. The 18-month pilot programme employs the principles of the NABERS and the objective is to target the in-use energy performance throughout the development process which is then verified by an investment-grade rating using 12 months of metered data.

Our work on this pilot study has required a strong collaboration with a number of industry partners.  With Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan as the primary sponsors and as developers / owners they are key stakeholders in the process and active in guaranteeing the success of the scheme so that it can provide an informative insight for UK building owners and occupiers and potentially lead to change in the way we grade our building stock in regards to energy efficiency.

The pilot team, which is led by Robert Cohen from Verco Advisory Services and supported by Bill Bordass from the Usable Buildings Trust, is testing a ‘Design for Performance’ approach in UK prime rented office developments and validating a building’s energy consumption compared to that declared at Design stage. This includes reviewing the project thermal modelling and providing a performance rating for the development in advance of occupation, as well as providing input on ‘lessons learnt’ when handing over and monitoring buildings in use.

Waterman’s Director Mark Terndrup commented; “This pilot means that office buildings across the UK can achieve more accurate predictions of thermal models which has historically been a challenge. Differentiating Base Building energy use from that used by occupiers has provided a focus for stakeholders in Australia and has allowed the market to drive improvement. We are convinced the same potential exists for the UK market place.”

Nick Jarman, Stanhope, commented; “By pulling together the right team, we have no doubt that what we have delivered at Angel Court will change the way the UK construction industry looks at energy in use.  We are delighted with the progress so far and with Angel Court now officially opened (Feb 23, 2017), the results are clear for all to see.”

Angel Court was designed by Fletcher Priest Architects with MEP, Structural and Environmental multidisciplinary services provided by Waterman Group.

The winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on 7th June 2017 at Marriott Grosvenor Square, London.
