Waterman staff walk 10,000km in charity fundraiser
We are delighted that our recent Waterman Walkabout challenge, which saw teams across the UK compete to be the first to complete a 1,500 km walk, has raised £3,000 for CALM – the Campaign Against Living Miserably.
Back in December, our Infrastructure and Environment team kicked-off a new challenge to improve health and wellbeing. The Waterman Walkabout began with the goal of completing a virtual walking and running tour of our UK offices before Christmas – a distance of approximately 1500 km.
Split into seven regional teams, the challenge was to become the first group to complete the tour between Perth and London, with the total distance travelled being an accumulation of each team members’ efforts. Staff were actively encouraged to take a break from their desk and get outside for some fresh air and exercise, whilst raising money and awareness for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), who are leading a movement against suicide. We received positive feedback from the teams who took part, with many people being joined by family members taking a break from their daily duties to venture out in to nature, enjoy the fresh air, clear their minds and take some exercise throughout the challenge. Most people felt noticeable improvements in both their mental and physical health, and as a result of further lockdown restrictions and our desire to build on the benefits, the team decided to extend the challenge over the festive season and into early January. Ultimately the Midlands Team came out victorious, with all the teams clocking up a combined 10,000km.
CALM’s Fundraising Officer, Rachel Tysh, said: “With the pandemic affecting our lives in many ways, more than ever people need CALM and the support we give. Thanks to Waterman’s incredible fundraising efforts we can continue to be there for whoever needs us.”
Waterman’s Director for Infrastructure and Environment, Anna Bacon commented: “Our aim was to encourage our teams to take some exercise and get out and about in the fresh air. Exercise has a proven positive impact on mental health and the challenge helped teams to talk around things other than work. We are delighted we have also been able to raise much needed funds to support the work of CALM. The lockdown restrictions continue to be challenging and we are committed to supporting our staff with their mental and physical wellbeing and plan further activities throughout 2021.”
