Work underway at major new East Lothian residential development
Waterman is delighted that work on the first homes at Blindwells, a major residential development in Scotland’s East Lothian, has now begun following three years of detailed ground investigation and enabling works.
Hargreaves Land’s major scheme will create a new community for East Lothian, adding 1,600 homes, including 480 affordable properties, along with new education facilities, a healthcare hub and local retail outlets all within a stunning landscaped setting featuring a garden network of paths and outdoor recreation areas for the wider community to enjoy. Located less than ten miles east of Edinburgh, new residents at Blindwells will benefit from the 40-mile view of the scenic Firth of Forth coastline, providing a fantastic location to enjoy the best of outdoor living.
Historically, the site was home to an underground coal mine which has left a legacy of old workings on the site. More recently, major open cast mining activities took place up until its closure 20 years ago. Waterman’s team worked closely with Hargreaves Services (Blindwells) Ltd. throughout their significant package of earthworks, ground improvements and infrastructure work, enabling construction of the new residential units to begin. Our team provided geo-environmental, earthworks, ground improvement, drainage design and flood risk design services and were also appointed as Principal Designer and contract administrators for the earthworks and infrastructure contracts.
In a recent statement, Iain Slater, Development and Estates Director at Hargreaves Land, said: “Over the past six years significant investment has been made in order to facilitate new residential development at Blindwells…We have experienced a strong level of interest from housebuilders since we started marketing the scheme last year, which has led to us making excellent progress on the residential element of Blindwells.”
Tom Hall, Waterman’s Associate Director and Project Lead for Blindwells, said: “I am delighted to see construction begin on the first new homes at Blindwells. Our multidiscipline team worked in close collaboration with Hargreaves and the project team to successfully remediate and improve this former mining site and establish the new infrastructure required for an incredible new community for East Lothian.”
The development’s first homes will be available to reserve later this spring.
