Manchester Metropolitan University’s Student Union Building

The new 23,000m², four storey building will accommodate 5,000 students and 250 staff and incorporates an entertainments hall, shop, café bar, offices and fitness studio. Waterman are appointed to provide building services, structural engineering and acoustics for this new build multi use Student Union Building located within the city centre MMU Campus area.

Our building services team are providing the RIBA stage 3 design services for new the build Student Union Building, replacing the existing Union Building and consolidating the University’s relocation to a new campus area.

The appointment covered the design of the mechanical, electrical and public health engineering services associated with the multiuse building which incorporated different areas of use varying from offices, shops and breakout spaces to a fully fitted out night club and bar areas.

The design of the services needed to reflect the varying ways each space would be used across the daytime and them the night, whilst be taking full engineering account of the building’s city centre location and the specific acoustic requirements of such a specialist use building.

The design provides a highly flexible, modern and highly energy efficient services installation to suit the University’s requirements and ensure that the building is operated a low carbon emissions in line with the MMU carbon reduction and monitoring requirements.

Our building services team were then retained as the Client’s representative to work with the appointed contractor to assist in developing the final design solution and to ensure compliance with the Employer’s Requirements.

The building was awarded the 2015 RIBA North West Regional Award for the Education Building Category in recognition of quality of building.
