We are delighted to celebrate the success of Aamar Lovell, an apprentice engineer in our Manchester Infrastructure & Environment team, who has won the ICE North West Princess Royal Award for Emerging Engineers at the regional final.

The award recognises outstanding early-career engineers who demonstrate technical excellence, innovation and a commitment to the profession. Aamar was named this year’s winner following a standout presentation titled “Engineering the 22nd Century Bridge: Materials, Digitalisation and Predictive Intelligence,” showcasing his forward-thinking approach to the future of civil engineering.

 

Reflecting on his achievement, Aamar said: “I am honoured to have been awarded the ICE North West Princess Royal Award for Emerging Engineers, and I am grateful to be part of such a supportive team. A huge thank you to everyone at Waterman’s Manchester office.”

Through his work with Waterman, Aamar has supported a wide range of infrastructure projects, including Manchester City Council’s 2026 General Inspection programme and structural assessment work for DRAX Hydro in Scotland. His role has included inspection planning and delivery, site inspections, technical assessments, and producing clear, high-quality reports to support asset management and maintenance decisions.

As the North West winner, Aamar will now represent the region in the next stage of the competition, with the opportunity to be shortlisted for the Princess Royal Award for Emerging Engineers International Final later this year.

Dido Properties’ development will see the creation of a new media campus at a 56-acre brownfield site in Buckinghamshire. Situated next to the A404 at Little Marlow, the former quarry and landfill site will now be transformed to deliver an 18-soundstage production campus.

Designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, the scheme will see the construction of 280,000 sq ft of production offices, 472,000 sq ft of soundstages and 410,000 sq ft of workshops, together with substantial supporting infrastructure, transport and landscaping works.

Commenting on the decision in a recent statement, Robert Laycock, Marlow Studios CEO, said: "For Buckinghamshire, this is a powerful vote of confidence in the coming generations. Regenerating a poorly landfilled site to enable new careers and pass on exceptional skills in this world-beating British industry is the right decision. It’s a signal to investors who aim for high quality development, done in the right way, through outstanding design that brings sustainable opportunities and benefits to their community. The decision is clear in its assessment that Marlow Studios will attract global investment, help the UK maintain its competitive creative edge, and will strengthen the West London film cluster.”

The site lies on green belt land to the south of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Much of this site was previously used in the mid-20th Century for gravel extraction and the excavations were subsequently filled. There remain some residual areas that have the potential for mineral extraction across limited areas of the site. There are also a number of waterbodies within close proximity, including Westhorpe Lake which covers part of the site.

Our team has been supporting the scheme since inception. Our environmental and infrastructure specialists delivered the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and prepared both the Environmental Statement (ES) and subsequent ES Addendum reports in consultation with the local Planning Department. As part of this, we provided a wide range of supporting technical studies and reports, including transport, air quality, noise and vibration, archaeology, built heritage, ecology, arboricultural, ground conditions and contamination, in addition to developing the sustainable transport strategy.

Our specialists also completed a waste recovery environmental permit (EP) application to enable the works to be completed under a waste recovery EP rather than a waste disposal EP. This will save the client in excess of £400,000.

Finally, our ecology team surveyed and assessed offsite areas to achieve at least 10% biodiversity net gain.

Waterman has been appointed on the Port of Dover Specialist Design Support Framework.

One of the busiest international ferry ports globally, and the second busiest UK cruise port, Kent’s Port of Dover is home to the cross-channel roll-on/roll-off ferry to France, in addition to a range of commercial activities, including cruise, cargo and marina.

Running for an initial three years, our appointment to the framework will see our team delivering design support for the Port’s civils and highway assets, including bridges, culverts, paving and gantries. Our involvement will also see our specialists provide consultancy on the testing, design, analysis and material selection for a range of Port assets, in addition to inspections and feasibility studies.

Congratulations to Aamar Lovell, an Apprentice Engineer from our Manchester Infrastructure & Environment team who has been shortlisted for the ICE North West Rising Star Award.

We are delighted that Aamar has progressed to the judging stage of these prestigious Awards, which recognise emerging talent making a strong contribution early in their careers.

Through his work with the Civil & Bridge Structures Team, Aamar has supported a range of infrastructure projects, including Manchester City Council’s 2026 General Inspection programme and structural assessment work for DRAX Hydro in Scotland. His involvement has included supporting inspection planning and delivery, undertaking site inspections, contributing to technical assessments, and producing clear reports to support informed asset management and maintenance decisions.

Alongside his technical role, Aamar is actively involved in professional engagement and early careers outreach. He is a member of the ICE North West Rising Star Committee and volunteers at careers and employability events, where he promotes civil engineering apprenticeships and career pathways within the industry.

The winner will be announced at the awards dinner on 7 May 2026 at the Hilton Hotel, Liverpool.
