Users can easily travel by foot, bike, scooter or wheelchair, with a lift at both ends making it fully accessible. Cyclists are able to take their bikes into the lifts or walk them up the steps using the cycle wheel groove.

The bridge accommodates the anticipated pedestrian flows, including both the town centre regeneration and fans from the nearby football stadium. The improved connectivity will also benefit the planned youth zone next to the interchange, a destination for young people in the area providing sports, arts, performance and enterprise sessions.

The new bridge was constructed to replace the former Jumble Lane level crossing which closed as part of Network Rail’s programme to remove the risk of outdated level crossings that were no longer fit for purpose. Together with Network Rail, Barnsley Council decided to build an ambitious structure that would create a placemaking landmark, whilst complimenting the surrounding area, including The Glass Works development.

Our team was the lead structural and civil designer, seeing us work in collaboration with Barnsley Council, IBI Group Architects and Network Rail to achieve this striking structure.

Through our work chairing the Innovative Transport Working Group, Waterman supported Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) in their bid to host the event. This initiative sees our specialists champion the latest developments in transport, including autonomous vehicles, electric and zero-emission technology, 5G technology and traffic management systems. In addition, we have been supporting TfWM to deliver their ‘Influencing Transport Lab’, which is a collaboration across public, private and academic sectors. We have been delivering major projects in this area across the last 12 months, including working with Mobility by Colas on their ANAIS road inspection and asset management system, which has been trialled by National Highways in the Midlands area.

A joint effort between Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), the Department for Transport (DfT), Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK) and the NEC Birmingham, this latest success underlines the West Midlands’ growing reputation as a hotbed for innovation and the development of cutting-edge transport technology and systems.

The ITS World Congress attracts thousands of delegates and speakers from around the world and includes seminars, exhibitions, technical visits, and outreach events. It provides a platform for the latest developments in transport technology and mobility solutions.

The improvements include four new bus stops in Barrack Row, more pedestrianised space and prioritised crossings, new public toilets, two Fastrack stops and Sapphire service improvements on Garrick Street. In addition, electric bus charging point infrastructure will be added, along with real-time information screens, new quality seating and gull wing canopies with high quality under-canopy lighting to provide a bright open environment at night.

Initially, our team further developed a concept layout produced by others, which included a two-lane arrangement for buses. Whilst this layout maximised space for vehicles and bus stops, it was considered to provide a poor passenger experience as they would be provided limited waiting space and would have to make additional road crossings to access a central narrow pedestrian island separating the two bus lanes. Our experts shared these concerns the client and, as a result, we then re-designed the scheme with an improved public realm area and ample space for passengers to spread out in this busy town centre location.

We worked closely with Kaner Olette Architects to develop the canopy design and spatial arrangement within the scheme, establish the distribution of street furniture and planting and produce a variety of reports and documents supporting the associated planning application.
