Craig joined Waterman in 1984 as a graduate structural engineer. He steadily progressed through the organisation, joining the Plc Board in 2003. He has been a significant contributor to the overall success of Waterman, particularly involving multidiscipline projects both in the UK and overseas. Built over four decades, Craig’s portfolio includes many award-winning projects such as: London Bridge City, Marble Arch Place, Thames Court, Angel Court, One Wood Street and One New Street Square.
Craig’s particular contribution to Waterman’s success was his lifelong commitment to seeking out the best solutions to challenging technical problems. His enthusiasm for exploring ideas through sketching and discussion enabled him to develop strong relationships with clients and industry colleagues. These attributes have been passed on through his mentoring of and support for many engineers in Waterman over the years.
Reflecting on his career, Craig said: “I have been very fortunate to work with great people on amazing projects. It has been a fantastic journey making lifelong friendships along the way. The long-term continuity of any business relies on the next generation. I am positive about the future, so now is the right time for me to handover my responsibilities to my capable friends and colleagues.”
Waterman has been planning for succession over many years with the next generation taking more active and responsible roles within the organisation. During 2020 and 2021, Waterman appointed new Managing Directors for its Structures, Building Services and Infrastructure and Environment Consulting operations in the UK.
Waterman Chief Executive Nick Taylor said: “Craig has been a huge inspiration to us all at Waterman. His personality and passion for people and our profession are reflected in the business disciplines he built. Personally, I shall greatly miss Craig as we have both been at Waterman for nearly four decades and have travelled the world together to support our overseas clients and colleagues. I am sure that all of us who have had the great fortune to have worked with Craig will have a fond story to tell about his natural enthusiasm, zest for life and passion for his work!”
Craig will formally step down from the Plc Board on 31st March 2023 after a phased handover of his responsibilities within Waterman Group and the operational companies. Neil Humphrey will be appointed COO UK from 1st January 2023 which expands his existing role as COO of Infrastructure & Environment to encompass the Property teams.
