Making a Difference

We believe in forging a better future for the communities we help create. That’s why we work closely with our clients, stakeholders and local communities to leave a positive legacy through every project we deliver.

From our award-winning apprenticeship scheme and STEM initiatives through to our volunteering, charity and wellbeing programmes, we actively support and invest in local communities, schools and the next generation of engineers. We are passionate about tackling the climate emergency, and are committed to reaching Net Zero in line with the requirements for keeping global temperature rise under 1.5°C.

Through our Corporate Social Responsibility framework, we support our clients and partners to meet their own strategies and objectives, undertaking joint social value and community engagement activities on schemes of every scale. We draw upon our experience of delivering social value through our many framework appointments with public and private sector clients and long-term partnerships.

Our social value strategy is aligned with the UK Government’s Social Value Model and the UN Sustainability Goals, and by understanding our clients’ priorities and setting out clear KPIs and tracking systems, we ensure social value is always delivered consistently, no matter what the scheme.

Better Bankside – Lunch Time Planting

Helping Better Bankside with the fantastic work they do in our local community. During lunchtime gardening sessions, we helped dig, plant, pot and spruce up the green spaces on Bankside, right on the doorstep of our London office, making the area greener and more beautiful.

Our Charity Partners 2023-2024

Each year, our people select our charity partners for the coming twelve months, and this year we’re delighted to be supporting both the Children’s Bereavement Centre and the Loiyangalani Trust.

Based in Newark, the Children’s Bereavement Centre offers a wide range of support completely free of charge for children and young people. Their aim is simple: to help young people cope with the grieving process as the options for support when a child is bereaved are incredibly limited. Their work is extremely important, covering very young children, sibling groups and in-person sessions, supported by staff and volunteers. These sessions focus on therapeutic activities aimed to help explore internalised feelings, build confidence, and meet others in a fun and safe environment. They organise fundraising activities, including sponsored cycling events and their annual family friendly ‘ScareFest’ involving pumpkin picking, fancy dress, and carnival games.

The Loiyangalani Trust provides ongoing funding and in-person support for the education of the resident Turkana people in the small town of Loiyangalani, located on the southern-eastern coast of Lake Turkana, Kenya. Anthony Mitchel founded the Trust in 2009 following a series of visits to the small town, and later gathered a group of friends to help redevelop and kit – out a local school, pay students’ fees, provide uniforms, books and supply nutritious meals. Waterman is also sponsoring students so that they can continue into secondary and vocational education.
