Five of our structural specialists recently headed to Norfolk’s Bircham Newton construction training facility to guide a team of aspiring engineering and built environment professionals from University College London (UCL) for a full week at Constructionarium.
Working alongside engineers from Laing O’Rourke, our Emily Wingrove, Huseyin Hussein, Sophie Gohlan, Oliver Howell and Pavlos Tsouros steered the students through the tender and construction stages of a project, giving them technical and contractual advice as they experienced construction first-hand. Across the week, the students got to build scale replicas of major projects such as Millau Viaduct and Ravenspurn Oil Rig, as well as Kingsgate Bridge and Brewery Wharf Bridge.
We have supported Constructionarium’s annual events for over 16 years, and their week-long initiatives provide students with the opportunity to gain practical construction experience and learn more about the responsibilities attached to particular roles.
Celebrating the successful event, Waterman’s Senior Engineer, Emily Wingrove, said: “Constructionarium is such a great opportunity for UCL students to get their boots on the ground and gain some valuable hands-on construction and engineering experience. I was impressed with their enthusiasm and capabilities, and I think this is a perfect way for them to put theory into practice. Our team thoroughly enjoyed the week at the fantastic Bircham Newton facility working alongside Laing O-Rourke. As always, it was a real privilege to help inspire the next generation of engineers and construction professionals!”
