Sustainability-focused Omni Centre Car Park redevelopment wins BCI Award

Published 19th October 2023

The low-carbon car park redevelopment at the Omni Shopping Centre in Edinburgh picked up the award for ‘Environment and Sustainability Initiative of the Year’ at the 2023 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

Using low carbon materials and management systems, this sustainable redesign addressed corrosion issues affecting the safety and functionality of the busy four-level car park, while improving environmental sustainability. By retaining as much of the existing structure as possible, the scheme successfully preserved eight million kg of embodied carbon associated with the existing build, with targeted repairs adding just a further 90,000 kg of carbon. The corrosion management strategy also features online control and performance assessment, providing data to prove its resilience in the future.

Our structural engineering team supported C-Probe Systems and Makers Construction for this exciting scheme. To see a full list of BCIA winners, click here.
