BAE Govan Wet Dock Hall

Published 15th April 2025

Measuring 170m long and 80m wide, BAE’s vast new Glasgow Wet Dock Hall facility on the banks of the River Clyde will be large enough for two Type 26 frigates to be constructed simultaneously, with extensive provision of both gantry cranes and runway cranes.

Our team delivered structural engineering services for this scheme, working with McLaughlin & Harvey to provide a peer review of the proposed structural steelwork, concrete works and drainage works for their successful tender submission.

Concluded within an eight-week period, our review identified significant potential savings in several areas, including the steel tonnage used for the trussed frame, steel connection and fabrication simplifications. In addition, we identified reduction of the RC slab, wet dock walls and working platforms thicknesses, together with piling and reinforcement density reductions.

This equated to huge potential financial savings, as well as programme timeframe reductions.
