Richard Brooks awarded Phil Tindall Memorial Medal

13 July 2023

Richard Brooks, Waterman’s National Lead for Civil Structures, has been recognised for his long-term commitment to mentoring and supervising early career civil engineers as they strive towards achieving key qualifications.

The Phil Tindall Memorial Medal is awarded to those who have been particularly successful in mentoring civil engineers during the first ten years of their careers, helping them to develop skills, expertise and confidence. Presented by the Worshipful Company of Engineers on behalf of the Rochester Bridge Trust, the medal is awarded in memory of Phil Tindall, a civil engineer who dedicated his time to inspire many young engineers throughout his 40-year career.

The judges were impressed by Richard’s approach to mentoring, which he embeds within the day-to-day working practices of his team. This approach continuously improves project quality and overall outcomes, rather than viewing mentoring as a standalone activity.

Passionate about mentoring, Richard has acted as a Supervising Civil Engineer or Primary Sponsor to many engineers working towards their professional development qualifications, and regularly contributes to career development activities at local schools and colleges. Since joining the Waterman team in 1997 as a graduate from the University of Sheffield, Richard has gone on to play a leading role in our Civil Engineering service line specialising in bridge and temporary works design. Throughout his career, he has built an impressive portfolio punctuated by a range of a prestigious projects such as the Royal Woolwich Arsenal Crossrail box, the Star and Garter redevelopment in Richmond and multiple bridges. Richard was recently awarded Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Celebrating the news, Richard commented: “I’m thrilled to win this prestigious award, particularly when it relates so closely to something I’m passionate about. Helping early careers engineers to grow their confidence, skills and knowledge is vital for our industry, and I consider it a privilege to help set their careers off on the right track. Really, this award reflects the work of my whole team, since they all contribute their time and expertise to support our budding civil engineers, so we’ll celebrate this together!” To find out more about the Phil Tindall Memorial Medal, click here.
