Artisan Heights

Situated on New Wakefield Street, the BREEAM Excellent rated 32-storey Artisan Heights offers 603 accommodation units along with two common rooms, study areas, a cinema room, meeting rooms, karaoke room, tea and coffee stations, laundry, bike store and games areas. Located within walking distance of both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, students can enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Peak District from the top floors.

SimpsonHaugh’s architectural design is inspired by the site’s history of machine and tool manufacturing and features an anodised aluminium façade with perforated panels which take reference from the cast iron ventilation grilles of the iconic Principal Hotel. In a boost for Manchester’s wildlife, Artisan Heights incorporates a green roof on level five which offers a natural habitat for insects and birds.

Waterman’s experts designed the building’s mechanical and electrical system with energy measures to achieve the BREEAM Excellent rating. This included the integration of a highly insulated façade to reduced heat loss combined with a natural ventilation overheating strategy. We designed a combined heat and power unit which generates electricity for use in the building as well as hot water for domestic use. As the multi-storey residential property has retail uses at ground floor the team incorporated enhanced fire suppression and detection systems throughout the building, including wet risers, commercial and domestic sprinkler systems.
