Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Centre at Sunshine Hospital opened in May 2019. This facility provides inpatient and outpatient women’s and children’s services in a family friendly environment and enables more women and families in Melbourne’s west to have better access to children’s services closer to home.

The Women’s and Children’s Centre houses 237 IPU beds, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four operating theatres, CSSD, emergency entry and all associated support areas.

As the third largest Maternity Hospital in the State, located in one of Melbourne’s major growth corridors, Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s is approximately 30,000 square metres and has been built over seven levels.

Waterman undertook full engineering services designs for the scheme, spanning the mechanical and electrical, structures, environmental and infrastructure disciplines.

In order to connect the existing hospital with the new hospital for engineering redundancy support, an underground tunnel link to the existing hospital was constructed for back of house and food transport connection along with an overhead air bridge for patient and staff transfers to the existing acute hospital support facilities.

The engineering services included new substations, main switchboards, chillers, boilers and medical gas plant. The systems have been designed on ESD principles and are arranged to provide future flexibility, redundancy, adaptability and whole of life value.
