Making a Difference

We believe in forging a better future for the communities we help create.

That’s why we work closely with our clients, stakeholders and local communities to leave a positive legacy through every project we deliver.

From our award-winning apprenticeship scheme and STEM initiatives through to our volunteering, charity and wellbeing programmes, we actively support and invest in local communities, schools and the next generation of engineers. We are passionate about tackling the climate emergency, and are committed to reaching Net Zero in line with the requirements for keeping global temperature rise under 1.5°C.

Through our Corporate Social Responsibility framework, we support our clients and partners to meet their own strategies and objectives, undertaking joint social value and community engagement activities on schemes of every scale. We draw upon our experience of delivering social value through our many framework appointments with public and private sector clients and long-term partnerships.

Our social value strategy is aligned with the UK Government’s Social Value Model and the UN Sustainability Goals, and by understanding our clients’ priorities and setting out clear KPIs and tracking systems, we ensure social value is always delivered consistently, no matter what the scheme.

Waterman’s commitment to Social Value

Giving back to the community

Supporting our local community is important to all of us, and that’s why our people benefit from two paid volunteering days each year to work with causes which resonate with them. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Giving back through leadership at Longford Scout Group’s Summer Camp

Giving back through leadership at Longford Scout Group’s Summer Camp

Charlie Horne, an Apprentice Engineer with our Infrastructure and Environment team, recently volunteered as a leader at Longford Scout Group’s week-long summer camp near Welshpool, Wales. Supporting nearly 100 young people aged 6–18, he helped run activities including kayaking, archery, pioneering, and shelter building, and supervised Scouts and Explorers cooking meals over open fires. Having been part of the group since age six, volunteering is now his way of giving back to the community and helping young people develop skills through outdoor adventure.

Bringing music, art, and community spirit with Global Grooves

Bringing music, art, and community spirit with Global Grooves

Rachael Taggart, our EIA Consultant and Assistant Ecologist, volunteered with Global Grooves as a carnival drummer and art assistant, supporting parades, festivals, and community events. At this summer’s Feel Good Family Picnic in Middleton, she helped deliver music, art, and entertainment to the Greater Manchester community. She also contributes to arts and crafts projects at The Vale in Mossley, a creative hub for rehearsals, performances, and community events.

Ready, set, grow: Getting our dig on with Food Works Sheffield

Our Sheffield team spent a day volunteering with local environmental social enterprise, Food Works, who provide fair and sustainable food for everyone in Sheffield from their kitchen, market and farm. Our green-fingered volunteers helped carry out essential maintenance at Food Works’ food farm, and got their hands dirty planting up delicious vegetables and herbs which will ultimately help ensure that no one in Sheffield goes hungry.

Recorra / Better Bankside – River Thames Beach Clean

Led by waste management company Recorra in partnership with Better Bankside, our team joined fellow volunteers for an hour of combing the beach, removing rubbish, plastic, and other debris to help keep the Thames clean.
